Dr. Goldberg’s interest in the overlap between mental health and the law began with completion of his master’s degree in Medical Humanities and Bioethics at Northwestern University’s The Graduate School. After finishing specialized training in General Adult Psychiatry, Dr. Goldberg completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. His active research areas include informed consent, decision-making capacity, the divergence between bioethics and the law, as well as forensic psychiatric ethics. He has published widely on these topics in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Bioethics Neuroscience and The Hastings Center Report. He has also written a book chapter on forensic ethics, pending publication by the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Goldberg is a member of multiple professional organizations and served on the ethics committee for the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Dr. Goldberg is also a volunteer clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and provides supervision to trainees.
Dr. Goldberg maintains particular interests in matters of capacity (to stand trial, to testify, to contract), medical informed consent, personal injury litigation and forensic ethics.
